Enforced Break

I kind of fell off the radar after Quassy- that calf pull really hurt, was angry and inflamed, despite R.I.C.E. and massage, and I decided to go easy on it for a while.  I tried some cycling on it as per Marisa's suggestion, but since I'm not much of a spinner, couldn't do much before using forbidden muscles.  Then Friday of that week, I took the girls down to Orlando to experience Universal (especially the Wizarding World of Harry Potter), and finally see Zane perform in La Nouba. (Zane was lovely as ever, and caught her double with ease).

(La familia, with Zane post-show)

There was no real cycling, and my swims consisted of dodging families while attempting to do laps consistently, and when that didn't work, hold my breath per length.  There were also some handstand competitions thrown in for good measure.

Finally, the last 2 days down there, I had myself together enough to go for runs before the girls got up.  The first day, I did the loop without my Garmin on - it was supposedly a 3.8 mile loop.  The next day, I did it again, this time with the Garmin.  Turns out the loop was barely 3 miles, so I continued running and got just over 4 in.  Really, really slowly.  Running in the heat and humidity that was going on down there was rough!  And somehow tougher than NYC lately.

I definitely felt that taking the time off meant losing a lot of the conditioning that I've worked so hard to develop over the last few months.  But strangely, that doesn't worry me too much - my next tri is a sprint at the end of July, then Nautica NYC in August, which is an oly.  I can do that today.  Maybe not at my best time, and not enjoy every minute of it, but I can finish without embarrassing myself too much.  Between now and then, though, I have nearly 2 months, most of which I will be here on my own without my kids, which means more, harder training.  Plus the break left me eager to get back into it.  The next bit will be about nice long rides, frequent runs, and as much pool time as I can squeeze in.
