Run and Fly

Trying to balance my running with flying been particularly interesting lately, especially as weekly mileage and long run distances have increased. Some weeks I seem to be more successful than others. On the day of the nun run, I had a particularly successful practice, and was able to sustain my energy levels throughout flying trapeze, moreso even than on days that I hadn't done anything. I was told that the layout fulls that I was throwing were the best i had ever dome. That held true on a few other days that I both ran and flew, and I thought that I had found the perfect balance to optimize both running and flying.

Unfortunately, that formula is not meeting with continued success, and I'm fatiguing early on in flying trapeze. This is clearly sub-optimal, and may have been linked to both increased mileage, even on my easy days, and/or taking 4 days off in a row Thanksgiving week. There are so many variables at play that it's hard to determine what impact one of those many variables has on my flying some run days I fly really well, and others I fizzle relatively early in the class. While my hope was that easy run days would have no adverse impact on my flying, I'm not sure how willing I am to sacrifice those precious two trapeze days each week to the experiment.

I do know that when Josh gives advice, it's a good idea to take it, though, and when he said that at the end of class I should still be able to give 90% (which definitely hasn't been the case lately), something had to change.

Given that my current strategy is to run four days a week and use the other three days either for cross training or recovery, why have I been so insistent about running on Sundays and Wednesdays? Well, the reply regarding Sundays is not all that surprising. Weekend days mean I have more time to train. Sundays in particular are ideal because my girls are always with their dad on that day. Choosing not to do my long runs on Sundays so as to have something in the tank come 6pm has meant finding creative solutions for running on other days. And I may have to find a time-turner somewhere in order to find days other than Sundays for upcoming 20 and 22-mile long runs which will take upwards or 3.5 hours.

So the last couple of days, I've taken the opposite approach- no running on flying days, in order to see if it makes any difference. Well, Sunday was fine, though there was quite a bit of residual fatigue from Saturday's 18-milers. However, since I was only throwing mods (ie. I didn't need lots of power), it wasn't too big a deal.

Today, full day, has been a more significant test of the latest strategy. What I found was that being fully rested (enough sleep, no workout this morning) did not translate to a top performance day. Yes, there are other factors, blah, blah, blah. Still, I suspect that I might need to prime the pump, so to speak.

Anyway, though no video was taken of the fulls, Kat was nice enough to film the two catches. I tried using using some proprioceptive cues. What I was thinking was straight, tight, together. Here are today's attempts:

Now to compare to the most recent recorded attempts at splits and layouts prior to tonight:

I do think that some improvement can be seen, though there's still a long way to go.
