Miami Marathon?

I'm on the plane down to Miami. It's marathon weekend. The weekend I was supposed to be doing my first marathon. That's right - WAS is the operative word. It's no secret that I'm a klutz, but I usually manage to contain my clumsy tendencies while I'm supposed to be consciously moving my body through a set of movements - dancing, trapeze, etc., and limit my clumsiness to things like walking in the street, or climbing a flight of stairs.

So I certainly didn't expect to twist my foot. In a pothole while running. Now granted that I tripped during a recovery portion of my run, but somehow, that doesn't make me feel better. After some discomfort, and quite a bit of swelling, especially after trying a couple more long runs, I decided to seek the counsel of the Team in Training coach, and a podiatrist.

Those who know me know that this is truly bizarre behavior on my part. I tend to ignore pain and tough it out until it goes away. I did that to a jammed elbow ,and eventually (after 2 years), it stopped hurting. However, I am an older and wiser Galit, and have big plans for this year, such as (ahem) Ironman, as well as goals to improve race times on each race that I am doing the same as last year's - so far South Beach, Rev3 Quassy, and NYC Tri, so I decided to play it smart a/k/a play it safe.

Scott told me that it probably wasn't wise to run 26 miles on a compromised foot/ankle, and the podiatrist pretty much enforced that suggestion, saying that it looked like I had a possible hairline fracture of the 5th metatarsal (outside bone pinky side of foot), and I shouldn't do any running at all for 2 weeks, then return for another x-ray. He said that running on it could cause what might be a small hairline that would heal itself to get bigger, and result in a lot of time off. Well, clearly I didn't want that, so I decided not to run this weekend after all.

While bummed to miss out on a flat, fun, relatively easy marathon, I've decided not to let my airline ticket go to waste, and go to Miami anyway. I'll be staying at my parents' place, and will partake in another activity I love - flying trapeze! Since I'll be up in the Palm Beach area visiting Maxwell from the Ecuador trip, I thought I'd stop by Peter Gold's rig for a sunset class. And Sunday before I leave, I'll be taking my first SUP class. Just in case I feel like I need more activity, though, I've brought my TRX for some strength training, as well as a swim cap and goggles to either swim oceanside or in the pool.

I've got to say, it has been nice to do some swimming and cycling this week. I've been doing so much running lately that the change up is certainly nice.

The only question is... What trick should I play with tomorrow?

Aww, so sorry to hear this. I broke my fourth and fifth metatarsal in 07 - much more signifcantly than a hairline fracture - and it was about 8 weeks to full recovery. But, I swam the whole time, with my special waterproof cast. It's great that you are such a well rounded athlete that you have these other options!!

Well, that does sound promising- if it took you 8 weeks to full recovery from that, I'll hopefully be running again really soon! Swimming has fortunately not been a problem. Thanks for the encouragement!
