Long time, no see

It's been a long time - over a year since I last posted. Trapeze is still there, of course, although there has been a shift in venue, for so many reasons, but ultimately, a good change. Added to that, now, is trampoline, to enhance the flying, and for its own sake as I've been doing it more.

And beyond the usual assortment of aerial and textile adventures that I engage in, I decided that 2010 is the year when I compete in my first triathlon (having, of course no background to speak of in any of the three events that make it up). But it's a sport that I've admired for some time, and when people have mentioned that the train for tri's I've either thought or said "I'd like to do that".

Well, how many things are there that we'd "like to try" or at least give lip service to that desire. I'm not getting any younger, despite all attempts at time travel, and I refuse to believe that I've already reached my physical peak. So I decided that if I want to do something, I'll damn well do it.

In this case, before deciding on a training schedule, and in order for it to have any real significance, I needed to pick a date for my first triathlon. One that wasn't too far in the distant future, so that I couldn't slack off, and one where the distances of the swim bike, and most especially the run weren't too overwhelming for me. From all that I've read, a sprint distance is an ideal distance for a first tri. That means a half mile swim, 12 mile bicycle ride, and 5 k (3.1 mile) run. So I chose to do the Nautica South Beach triatholon, figuring I'd rather do the swim in slightly warmer waters, and the land activities on a fairly flat course. It's a classic course, so while the swim distance is the same, there's 19 miles on the bike, and the run is 4 miles instead of 3.1.

The I started training-I signed up for the nearest health club near me with a pool, and found a free training schedule online that was compatible with my race date, and off I went.

This latest blogging effort is a result of a desire to journal my training - and the lessons learned from it. So far, they translate far beyond the gym. Plus I've been getting random spam comments on previous blog posts. In my mind, it's sort of the universe confirming to me that my instinct to blog again is spot on. Even if I'm the only one reading this (which I really don't mind, and maybe in some ways prefer), I think a written memory of this journey is valuable to me.

All this isn't to say that I won't post about trapeze anymore - I'll still do that. I still love trapeze, and while I'm not sure that my tricks are any "bigger" than those of a year ago, I do think that overall my flying is tighter. And now I also have trampoline stories to tell.

More next post!
